Originally convened by the Virginia Beach Department of Social Services, the IAB has been in existence since the early 1980s.

Participation is open to individuals of all faiths and all denominations. There are no membership requirements, no governing board and no budget; yet this all-volunteer alliance serves as a powerhouse for positive change in the lives of Virginia Beach’s most vulnerable citizens.

From the start, the IAB was a collaborative relationship between what was then Virginia Beach Social Services and the faith community. The partnership began with the Resource Development Unit and has expanded to include many partners throughout the city that wanted to be about the collaborative work of expanding direct services, building relationships with those most on the margins, and for systemic change for the common good.

The original name of Interfaith Advisory Board to Social Services is now the Interfaith Alliance at the Beach. Virginia Beach Social Services is now Virginia Beach Human Services.

Our connections with Human Services and other community partners has allowed us to expand into the powerful advocacy group that we are today
